How do the key planning documents work together?

The NextGen Concept of Operations was released on June 13 and the NextGen Enterprise Architecture on June 22.  Both documents were developed to guide the critical decisions necessary to achieve the transformation of the air transportation system.  The release of these documents are major milestones in achieving the goals of the Joint Planning and Development Office.

NextGen Concept of Operations
The NextGen Concept of Operations describes how the Next Generation Air Transportation System will work from an operational standpoint in terms of how air traffic and airports are managed, how security is provided to protect airspace, cargo and people, how goals for protecting and enhancing our environment are achieved, and how processes in government and in civil organization will provide increased safety and efficiency.  The Concept of Operations forms a baseline to frame the partnership with the aviation stakeholder community to assess the concepts and to develop policy and research agendas. 

NextGen Enterprise Architecture
The NextGen Enterprise Architecture is a companion to the Concept of Operations.  The Enterprise Architecture is a structured, disciplined approach to the Concept of Operations.  Each segment contains specific details describing the operational activities, alignments, mappings, requirements and connections to the Concept of Operations. It defines the key capabilities of NextGen, how they fit together, the timing of their implementation, and how they impact the aviation community.  In summary, it is a systems documentation of NextGen.

JPDO to release Integrated Work Plan on July 31, 2007
The Integrated Work Plan describes the transition from the current air traffic system to the future air transportation system.  It is an evolutionary plan that illustrates how NextGen will be researched and developed, what commitments are required from the major development partners, what development and policy actions are required, and what key decisions will be required along the way. 

The Concept of Operations, Enterprise Architecture and Integrated Work Plan
The Concept of Operations describes the NextGen vision in a readable, prose format, the Enterprise Architecture serves as the blueprint for NextGen, and the Integrated Work Plan is the comprehensive multi-agency plan to achieve NextGen.  All three documents will be reviewed periodically and updated as necessary.
